The Barbados Music Awards January 08

For one night every year, Barbados’ musicians, singers, songwriters and producers are awarded for their talent. The Barbados Music Awards celebrates their collective abilities at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre in St Michael, just outside of Bridgetown.

Awards are presented in over 20 categories including Female and Male Entertainer of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Album of the Year. International Bajan star Rihanna is a past winner, having once taken home trophies for Best Soul/R&B Single, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Female Entertainer of the Year.

This years line up includes:

Tessanne Chin (born September 23, 1985, in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Reggae fusion recording artist, best known for her hit singles Hideaway and Messenger. Hideaway was featured on VP Records‘ Reggae Gold 2007. She has already opened for famous acts such as Patti Labelle, Peabo Bryson and Gladys Knight, and toured for 3 years with Jimmy Cliff.

Faith  Evans was born in Lakeland, Florida, to an African-American mother, Helene Evans, a professional singer. Her father, Richard Swain, was a Caucasian musician who left before Evans was born. A half year later, 19-year-old Helene returned to Newark, New Jersey and left Faith with her cousin Johnnie Mae and husband Orvelt Kennedy, the foster parents of more than hundred children they raised in the time that Faith lived with them. It was not until a couple of years later, Helene’s career floundered and she tried to take Evans back home. Faith, however, was scared to leave what she’d “been used to”, and instead, Helene moved in next door.
